It's because there are things nobody tells you when you launch. Things that sit underneath the design, underneath the photos, underneath the carefully written copy — quiet, invisible, and absolutely critical to whether Google ever finds you at all.

I know this because I lived it. For a year.

My first business - and the website that sat in silence

When I launched my first business, I did what most people do. I invested properly. I hired an agency to handle the branding and build me something that looked the part. I wasn't cutting corners or doing it on the cheap — I genuinely wanted to get it right from the start.

And what I got was beautiful. I remember feeling proud the day it went live. It looked professional. It felt like a proper business. I sent the link to friends and family and they loved it.

Then I waited for the enquiries to come in.

They didn't.

For a year, barely any traffic. No strangers finding me through Google. No enquiries coming through the contact form from people who'd discovered me online. Just silence — and growing confusion about what I was doing wrong.

I kept looking at the site. It still looked great. So why wasn't anyone finding it?

What I didn't know

Here's the honest answer: nobody told me.

Not the agency. Not anyone I spoke to at the time. It simply wasn't part of the conversation. The website was designed, built, handed over — and that was that. Job done.

What I didn't know was that a beautiful website and a findable website are two completely different things. Design gets you the first one. A whole other set of things — things I'd never heard of — gets you the second.

I'm not saying the agency did anything wrong. I don't think it was deliberate. I think it just wasn't considered part of the brief, and I didn't know enough to ask. That's exactly the problem. When you don't know what you don't know, you can't ask the right questions.

So the site sat there. Looking beautiful. Being found by almost nobody.

The moment things changed

It took me a long time — and a lot of research, late nights, and gradually piecing things together — to figure out what was missing.

When I finally did, and when I started putting those things in place one by one, everything changed. Not overnight. SEO never works overnight. But gradually, consistently, the traffic started coming. The right people started finding me. Enquiries started coming in from people I'd never met, who had simply searched for what I offered and found me.

That feeling — of realising what had been missing all along and how fixable it was — stayed with me.

It's why, now, every single website I build for a client has all of it built in from day one. Not as an afterthought. Not as an optional extra. As a non-negotiable part of the process. Because I know what it costs when it's missing — in time, in missed opportunities, in that creeping doubt that maybe the business just isn't working.

It is working. The website just needs the right foundations underneath it.

What these things actually are

I'm not going to list them all here — not because I want to be mysterious about it, but because each one deserves a proper explanation. A quick bullet point doesn't do justice to why it matters, what it looks like in practice, or the specific mistakes most people make when they try to do it themselves.

What I will say is this: none of them are complicated. None of them require a technical background or any special knowledge. They're not things you need to pay extra for or hire a specialist to explain. They are, genuinely, the stuff nobody tells you — and once you know them, you'll wonder why they aren't mentioned in every single piece of advice given to new business owners.

Confidence doesn’t come first — I know this personally

I’ve been the person who felt anxious about presenting in meetings.

The Most Complex Part: Safely Migrating Years of Blog Content

Hannah’s blog is central to her brand, voice and SEO history.
Moving it from WordPress into Pixieset required careful planning to protect her legacy content.

Here’s what the migration involved:

1. Exporting all blog posts

Text, images, tags, categories — everything.

2. Rebuilding each post in Pixieset’s CMS

A CMS (Content Management System) is simply the system that stores your website’s “filing” — pages, posts, images and settings.
Pixieset’s system works differently to WordPress, so posts had to be manually rebuilt.

3. Re-uploading imagery

Image URLs don’t transfer between platforms, so everything had to be added fresh.

4. Fixing internal links

To avoid broken pages and ensure a smooth user experience.

5. Preserving SEO slugs and keywords

So Google recognises the original content and maintains ranking.

6. Setting up redirects

Redirects act like a digital change of address, guiding readers (and search engines) to the updated location.

7. Mobile optimisation

Clean formatting for phone readers — which is the majority of blog traffic.

8. Aligning visuals with her refreshed brand

Balanced text blocks, soft typography, and a more polished layout.

Mothers day was this weekend just gone and while my social media was full of beautiful flowers and brunches — which is lovely, genuinely — it also got me thinking about something a bit less card-worthy. About the women I know who spent part of their Sunday answering emails. Updating a website. Writing a caption. Building something.

Some because they had to. Some because they wanted to. Most because it was both — and that's exactly the point.

We've all seen the memes.

"The feminine urge to start a DIY project." "The feminine urge to redecorate the house at midnight."

But there's another one that rarely makes it into the feeds — the feminine urge to build something of your own.

It's real. And it's powerful.

For many women, especially after becoming mums, there's a quiet shift. A pull towards creating work that fits around life, rather than forcing life to bend around work. It's not about escaping motherhood — it's about redefining what work looks like when you're juggling school emails, family logistics, paid work, and a head full of ideas. It's the art of spinning plates — and learning which ones actually matter.

And here's the honest truth: the flexibility that modern families actually need still isn't where it should be. It's getting there — slowly — but for most women, the gap between what's needed and what's on offer remains frustratingly wide. The world has changed. A lot of workplaces haven't quite caught up. And if we're being really honest — they're not in a hurry to. Which means waiting around for the system to fix itself isn't a strategy. Building something of your own is.

And in a world where most businesses are discovered online first, learning how to show up confidently becomes part of that survival.

Why the “mumpreneur” label misses the point

I've never liked the word "mumpreneur". Not because motherhood isn't important — it is — but because it suggests that becoming a mother somehow defines, or explains, someone's ability to run a business.

Becoming a mum is an era of life. A significant one. But it doesn't suddenly create entrepreneurial skills or ideas that weren't there before. For many women, both the capability and the idea already existed — the curiosity, the creative itch, the sense that something else might be possible. Motherhood is often the moment those things are activated differently. A catalyst, not a cause.

We don't label fathers as "dadpreneurs". And yet women who start businesses during this stage of life are often defined by it, rather than by their capability.

That's not to say motherhood doesn't change you — it absolutely does. But it doesn't replace who you were before. In many ways, it sharpens you. You learn to juggle more, to see things more clearly, to prioritise what truly matters. Decisions are made with greater intention, because they have to be.

Women shaping the small-business world

Almost one in five UK companies are now led by women, and that number continues to rise. In 2023, women founded over 160,000 new businesses — more than double the number founded just five years earlier. If women received equal business investment to men, experts estimate it could add up to £250 billion to the UK economy.

These aren't side projects. They're serious contributions — built from kitchen tables, late nights, early mornings, and nap-time admin. Small businesses like these don't just support families; they support communities and local economies.

But building a business is only part of the challenge. Being visible enough for it to survive is the other.

Why so many people take the leap

I've worked in large corporate environments and small family-run businesses — and I was recently made redundant. So I'm not writing this from the outside looking in. I know what it feels like to be in that position: experienced, capable, and suddenly having to navigate a job market that still hasn't fully figured out how to work for people with real lives.

Finding genuinely flexible work is, frankly, like finding a needle in a haystack. Part-time roles that actually pay properly barely exist. And flexible working — including working from home, which gave so many people back their time and their sanity — has had its reputation knocked by a minority who misused it. The result is that something that worked well for a lot of people quietly got pulled back, and the people who suffered most were the ones who needed it most.

Then there's the returning-from-maternity-leave reality. Too often, women come back to find their role has shifted, their confidence has been quietly undermined, or the structure they relied on has simply disappeared. At exactly the moment stability matters most, it vanishes. Two parents working, one often having to step back — usually the woman, and usually with a pay cut that doesn't reflect what she's worth. Anna Whitehouse of Mother Pukka has been shining a light on exactly this for years — campaigning loudly and consistently for flexible working to be treated as a right, not a privilege. The fact that it still needs campaigning for in 2026 tells you everything.

The system isn't broken by accident. It just wasn't designed with this in mind. And the difficult truth is that nobody is rushing to redesign it. So the most practical, powerful thing many women are doing is stopping waiting — and building something that actually works instead. On their own terms, around their own lives, with flexibility that doesn't have to be negotiated or justified.

So people adapt. They build something of their own — with flexibility baked in from the start. But stepping outside traditional structures comes with its own challenge: visibility. When you're no longer part of a larger organisation, being seen becomes your responsibility.

A local story: Lake Street Coffee

One of my favourite projects this year was working with Lake Street Coffee in Milton Keynes, part of the Fourteen Lakes Ltd Group.

Rachel, the owner, has built a business rooted in community and flexibility. Her team includes parents who need working hours that fit around school runs and childcare — and her business model actively supports that.

Part of my work with Lake Street Coffee was helping the business show up online with the same confidence and warmth people feel when they walk through the door. Brand photography, a new website, a joined-up online presence. Not polished for the sake of it — but a true reflection of who they already are.

Because for most small businesses, the first interaction doesn't happen in person. It happens on a screen.



The feminine urge, redefined

That feminine urge isn’t about paint charts or Pinterest boards.

It’s about building something that lasts.
A business.
A sense of autonomy.
A life that fits.

So here’s to everyone who’s ever sent emails during nap time, juggled school runs with deadlines, or wondered whether they’re allowed to take up space with their ideas.

You are your brand.
And you deserve to be seen building it.

Your work is good. Your online presence should look like it.

From Formula 1 to Finding Focus

Before I found myself behind the camera, I worked in the world of Formula 1, a fast-paced, high-pressure environment filled with precision, passion, and incredible people. I loved the challenge, the energy, the sense of momentum that came with it. But as my son approached school age, I realised the lifestyle that once fit so well no longer did.

F1 isn’t just a job, it’s a way of life. One that demands time, travel, and total immersion. And while I was grateful for everything it gave me, I knew I wanted to be more present at home, and to build something that offered more balance, more freedom, and more creative expression.

In February 2023, after months of indecision and quiet reflection, I handed in my notice and stepped into the unknown, swapping racetracks for the rhythms of slower living, and eventually, for life behind the lens.

Building Slowly, from Passion to Purpose

I didn’t discover photography suddenly, I’d loved it for years. But after having my son, I found my way back to it. Slower days and shifting priorities gave me space to reconnect with what lit me up creatively.

I began photographing for friends and family who ran small businesses, capturing their products, telling their stories, and helping shape their socials and websites, often simply because I enjoyed it. It started organically, but I could feel the spark, the mix of creativity and purpose I’d been craving.

What made the shift possible was the experience I brought with me. I’d spent years working in and for small businesses, building a solid foundation across finance, procurement, programme management, IT, engineering, and logistics. That background gave me a unique perspective. I understood what business owners needed, how they worked, and where creative strategy could support them best.

So I built this business slowly but intentionally, blending storytelling with structure, creativity with clarity. And while it may not have looked flashy from the outside, it was solid. Real. Rooted in connection, care, and craft.

Taking Up Space

Two of the most significant moments of this journey was standing in front of my own camera for a self-portrait session and full brand shoot with another photographer. It was vulnerable, honest, and unexpectedly empowering.

Showing up matters, not just behind the camera, but in front of it too - Because connection starts with being seen.

I realised I needed to show up for myself the same way I show up for my clients, to take up space, to be seen, and to stop waiting for permission. That’s at the heart of what I do now: creating spaces where people can feel comfortable, celebrated, and truly seen.

Lighting the Way

For a long time, natural light was at the heart of my work, soft, real, and beautifully imperfect. It’s how I learned to shoot, and it still holds a special place in my style. But as my work evolved, I felt ready to explore more, to grow my toolkit and expand what I could offer my clients.

Studio lighting wasn’t something I’d used much before, not out of fear, but because it hadn’t been necessary. When the time came to experiment, it felt exciting, a new challenge, a new skill. I gave myself permission to test, tweak, and build confidence in a new kind of light.

Now, it’s another part of how I work: not replacing natural light, but complementing it. Another layer of creativity. Another way to shape a story.

I’ll be using this space to:
• Share recent work and the stories behind it- from product shoots and brand photography to portrait sessions and creative website builds.
• Demystify the technical side- whether it’s types of photography, website platforms, or design tools. I’ll break down the jargon so it feels accessible, not overwhelming.
• Offer insight into what I do and why it matters- from lighting choices to colour palettes, from shot lists to storytelling.
• Explore the value of working with a small, creative studio- what it means to have a one-to-one experience, the flexibility it brings, and the personal care that underpins every project.
• Reflect on my own journey- the lessons learned, the pivots made, and the evolving relationship between creativity, confidence, and running a business on your own terms.
